Hey girl!  Do you want to attend a sporting event but have no one to go with?  No problem!  There are plenty of reasons why going to a sporting event by yourself can be an empowering - and fun!  - experience.  Keep reading to find out how you can own your solo game experience!

Think about a time when you’ve done something even marginally difficult or uncomfortable by yourself and how proud and accomplished you felt afterwards.  That’s what going out to a game by yourself can feel like!  There are no rules when it comes to enjoying sports.  If you’re a fan, you have the right to enjoy the game, so set aside any preconceived notions or social stigmas that you need a plus one or a group of friends to enjoy an event.  Going solo helps you to get to know yourself a little bit more, allows you to enjoy the game on your own terms (**no more wasting time standing in line for merch because that’s what your friends want to do!), and you can soak up everything the atmosphere has to offer.

Now that you’ve decided you’re going alone, there are some things you should know before you go.  Safety first, of course!  Here’s some tips for keeping yourself safe on your solo adventure:

  • Familiarize yourself with the venue.  Know the address of where you’re going, what time the gates open, what gate you will enter, and how you will get to and from.  If you’re driving, make sure you know the parking situation – what lot are you parking in, how much will it cost, and will it be well lit and accessible if you go back to your car late at night?  If you’re taking transit, know the routes and schedules and try to purchase your ticket in advance if you can.  And if you’re planning on getting in some steps and walking to the game, make sure your route is well lit, on main roads, and keeps you around people as much as possible.

  • Tell your friends or family where you will be and what your plans are.  It’s aways best for someone to know where you are (no matter where you’re going alone)!

  • Keep an eye out for where security, ushers, and other workers are.  You probably won’t have any issues, but just in case, it’s always a good idea to know where you can quickly find some help.

  • If you’re of age to drink alcohol, you may decide to have a drink (or more) at the game.  Nothing wrong with that, it’s your day out so do you!  But please be sure to keep your drinking at a safe level so that you can keep your wits about you.

Now that safety is covered, let’s talk about what sports are best for your solo adventure.  High energy sports that have boisterous crowds, loud music, and opportunities for fan engagement will be your best option, especially if this is your first solo game.  Some examples are hockey, basketball, baseball, and soccer.  These sports all have passionate fans, chants and cheering, and have opportunities throughout the game to mix and mingle with other fans.

When buying tickets, be sure to research the sport and the venue for the best seating options.  You don't need the most expensive seat in the house to enjoy the game. Research if there are any special fan zones located throughout the venue that you can either get a ticket/seat for or you can go there when you want a break from your seat to watch the game and mingle with other fans.

Don't be afraid to be yourself and introduce yourself to other fans! Intermissions and half times are a great opportunity to get out of your seat and be a little more social. Here are some suggestions for conversation starters:

  • Comment on a fan's jersey or apparel and ask where they bought it

  • Find a fan eating a fun treat and engage in conversation about what they're eating

  • If the game is on, comment on special plays to the people standing or sitting beside you

  • High five your fellow fans as you celebrate big moments

You never know who you will meet at the game! Perhaps it will lead you to meeting a special someone. If that happens, here are some tips for game day dating.

But girl, just remember, even though these tips can help you to have a successful solo gam day, there really are no rules. Enjoy the atmosphere, cheer for your favourite team and athlete(s), and make some memories along the way. You are sure to leave the game feeling empowered, confident, and like you had one heck of a solo date!
